Leonida

Leonida is the fictional US state at the center of GTA VI, Rockstar's modern satire of Florida. It mixes dense cities, beach resorts, island communities, wetlands, industrial towns, and mountain terrain into one state, the same way Florida itself ranges from Miami high-rises to the Everglades to the Panhandle.

Rockstar has officially named six major regions inside Leonida: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Beyond that official list, players piecing together trailer footage and map leaks have proposed several county names for the areas surrounding those regions, including Vice-Dale County (a Miami-Dade-style county around Vice City), Leonard County (Broward-inspired, to the north), Kelly County (northwest), and Ambrosia County (a rural, Hendry-style county around Ambrosia). None of those county names are things Rockstar has confirmed directly, so treat them as community research rather than official fact.

Real-world roots

The name Leonida is widely read as a nod to Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer credited with naming Florida, and the state's in-game seal is a direct parody of Florida's real state seal. Rockstar has talked publicly about the research that went into the setting, including meetings with former criminals, police officers, club promoters, and gun dealers around Miami, which lines up with how specific and lived-in Vice City's early footage looks.

The fictional media landscape leans into the joke too: a tabloid outlet called Mega Noticias and a running "Leonida Man" gag both parody Florida's real reputation for bizarre viral news stories, and government agencies referenced in-game, like the Leonida Department of Corrections and the Vice City and Vice-Dale police departments, mirror the structure of real Florida law enforcement.

How big is it

Rockstar hasn't confirmed exact map dimensions for Leonida. Community estimates built from trailer analysis and comparisons to past GTA maps commonly land around 1.5 to 2 times the size of GTA V's Los Santos and Blaine County, but treat that range as an estimate, not a confirmed number.

The story spans the whole state

Rockstar has described Jason and Lucia's story as a criminal conspiracy that extends across all of Leonida, not one confined to Vice City itself, which is part of why the state's other regions, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, matter as more than just scenery.
