Former Rockstar animator Mike York wants GTA 6's Jason Duval to show more personality. In an interview with TechRadar, he describes a reserved, highly controlled protagonist whose public footage has so far revealed less of the warmth and wit he hopes to see.

York worked at Rockstar New England from 2012 to 2015, contributing to GTA 5, GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2. His comments draw on that experience, but he is discussing the Extended Look as an outside observer, not disclosing GTA 6's unrevealed story.

The contrast he sees in the pair

York reads Lucia as the more outgoing presence, capable of pushing Jason beyond his guarded manner. He points to the rooftop-bar sequence as an example of the two bringing different social instincts to the same situation.

That is a promising tension for two playable leads. It can make the same outing feel different depending on who is taking the initiative, without requiring either character to carry every kind of scene alone.

It also leaves room for a slower reveal. A controlled manner in promotional footage could support a character arc, or it could remain a limitation in the finished story. The footage available to York cannot settle that distinction.

Praise and criticism from an animator

York praises the lighting, overall detail and hair movement, while finding some facial animation and interface elements less convincing. Those are his assessments of the material shown.

His discussion of possible animation techniques should be read as technical interpretation. It does not establish which capture tools Rockstar used or which elements will change before release.

The useful part of the interview is the question it leaves for the full story: will Jason become more expressive through the situations he shares with Lucia? The Jason profile and Lucia profile cover the established character information alongside this more subjective reaction.
